“Miss Margene”, a registered quarter horse was late for her evening feeding. Her owners were away and a friend was caring for the mare. She was found standing in a roll of rusty, twisted barbed wire with her right hip and both hind legs severely cut. Several hours later she was finally freed and returned to the barn. The friend, believing the injuries too severe, did not seek treatment. Seven days later her owners returned to find the mare in serious condition with proud flesh.
Two veterinarians recommended that Miss Margene be put to sleep. In their opinion her legs were too severely damaged and she would never walk. If she walked, she could not carry a foal and would be of no value as a broodmare. However, they were attached to the mare and declined to have her put to sleep.
For several years the owners had been actively involved with products made from stabilized aloe vera. They decided to treat Miss Margene with aloe vera only if she was not in pain and only as long as needed to determine its veterinary applications. The wounds were cleansed thoroughly and treated using only stabilized aloe vera gel and aloe vera cream. Except for a tetanus injection, no medication or suturing was done.
For several days the horse refused to move. Food and water were carried to her and within ten days she began to move around in the stall and at 30 days had returned to the pasture.
Benefits to the veterinary community became obvious. Shortly after the start of using the aloe vera the owners observed that the area surrounding the wound showed a remarkable suppleness and a marked decrease in pain sensitivity. The cream became a prototype of the now famous Horseman’s Dream Veterinary Cream and Horseman’s Dream had its beginning.
In October 1978, after more than two years of testing, Horseman’s Dream Liniment was introduced. It proved superior as a general purpose liniment with indications for sore muscles, bruising, joint stiffness, stimulates circulation. We retained some of the ingredients that demonstrated a benefit in other liniments. However, we omitted the large quantities of alcohol, acetone and water. Instead we used stabilized aloe vera and plenty of it.
We also developed the first aloe vera shampoo for animals. A statement from users like “your shampoo makes my nine year old gelding look like he is on oats and raw eggs” indicates the quality of our shampoo.
In March of 1980 we introduced Horseman’s Dream Veterinary Cream with aloe vera. The product has been so widely accepted and so successful that others soon began making an aloe vera Veterinary Cream. We appreciate the flattery.
Oh yes, and what ever happened to Miss Margene? She not only walks but runs and has raised three foals!!!
